Plans Advance for New Federal Courthouse

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A proposed new federal courthouse in downtown Buffalo is moving forward slowly.

The U.S. Senate passed a bill in March to provide funding for four federal courthouses, including $115 million for the Buffalo facility.

Funding was initially slated in the 2002 federal budget to build the courthouse in downtown Buffalo, but budget reductions forced the project to be scrapped.

As of press time, the bill still needed approval from President Bush, and the money still needs to be appropriated, a process scheduled to begin when the Senate reconvened in late March.

Land has already been purchased to build the courthouse on the north side of the Niagara Square.
