Firm Takes Top Construction Safety Award for CCA Project

FORT LAUERDALE, Fla. — Construction management firm Moss & Associates was recognized with the Liberty Mutual Group Gold Award for outstanding construction safety in completing the $90 million Saguaro Correctional Facility in Eloy, Ariz.

The Gold Award — Liberty Mutual’s highest honor for construction safety practices — is given to less than 1 percent of clients. Liberty Mutual is the sixth largest property and casualty insurer in the United States.

In order to be considered for gold recognition, which is based on the rate of lost workdays, injuries and illness associated with a particular construction project, companies must meet a threshold for lost days that is no more than 20 percent of the national average documented by the National Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With a team of 61 subcontractors, Moss committed a total of 387,000 man-hours to the Saguaro project.

The $90 million Saguaro Correctional facility has a 1,896-inmate capacity.

“It is a huge accomplishment for us,” says Moss Senior Project Manager Tom Russell, “no lost-time accidents and only one minor recordable incident — a sprained wrist.”

The 371,000-square-foot Saguaro medium-security facility is the latest project Moss has undertaken for Corrections Corporation of America. Housing 1,896 inmates, the facility incorporates support buildings for administration and inmate education programs. The project also features a 500,000-gallon-per-day wastewater treatment plant and a domestic water production facility.

Moss & Associates, which provides construction management and design/build services across the United States and the Caribbean, has more than $210 million of correctional projects completed or under way for CCA in Florida and Arizona. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Moss operates regional offices in Miami and Ocala, Fla.
