Jacobs Lands Federal Prison CM Contracts

BERLIN, N.H. — Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. secured the construction management contracts for federal corrections projects with a combined value of nearly $420 million in New Hampshire and Alabama.


Jacobs will provide construction management services, project monitoring and inspection, and administrative support for the new $240 million federal correctional facility in Berlin, N.H., and the new $180 million women’s facility in Aliceville, Ala. 


The 590,000-square-foot campus development in Berlin includes a 1,024-bed, medium-security facility, consisting of three, two-story general housing units and a two-story special housing unit. A 128-bed minimum-security work camp will be located adjacent to the main facility.


The campus will incorporate educational and vocational programming space, healthcare facilities and administrative offices, and will also house a Federal Prison Industries call center.


Oldcastle Precast Modular Group is contracted to manufacture, outfit and erect 864 precast concrete cells for the 180,000-square-foot medium-security facility in Berlin.


The 650,000-square-foot development in Aliceville includes a 1,152-bed medium-security facility with three four-story general housing units and several one- and two-story special housing units and support buildings. A 256-bed work camp adjacent to the main facility will house minimum-security inmates.


The campus development also includes, an administration building, a central utility plant, firing range and Federal Prison Industries manufacturing facility. Rotondo Weirich will manufacture 816 precast modular cells for the Aliceville facility, transporting the entire production and finishing process to the project site.


The Department of Justice previously awarded the Berlin design-build contract to the joint venture of Heery International and Bell Constructors Inc, of Rochester, N.Y., in mid-2007. Edward Rowse Architects, of Providence, R.I., is the architect of record, in association with San Francisco-based KMD Architects. \


The joint venture general contracting team of Montgomery-based Caddell Construction and Mobile-based W.G. Yates and Sons Construction won the Aliceville design-build contract in 2008. GRW Inc., headquartered in Lexington, Ky., is the lead architect-engineer on the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2011.
