CCA to Build 1,150-bed Georgia Prison

ATLANTA — Corrections Corp. of America will expand operations in Georgia after state corrections officials awarded the contract to build and operate a new $57 million prison to the Tennessee-based company.

Under the terms of the contract with the Georgia Department of Corrections, CCA will manage up to 1,150 male inmates at a new purpose-built facility, which will be owned by the private prison operator, according to reports.

The company will design, construct and operate the new Jenkins Correctional Center on a 107-acre CCA-owned site in Millen, Ga. The project team includes architectural firm DLR Group, headquartered in Omaha, Neb., and Oklahoma City-based general contractor Flintco.

“We are so very grateful to the residents, business and civic leaders and the elected officials in Millen and all of Jenkins County for showing us such an outpouring of support over the past months, when CCA was in the process of proposing that Georgia build and operate a prison on our Millen property, “ says Tony Grande, CCA executive vice president and chief development officer.

CCA will begin development of the $56.8 million facility before the end of the year with the first state inmates scheduled to move in to the new prison during the first quarter of 2012.

“For more than 12 years, CCA and the State of Georgia have worked in close partnership as CCA has provided safe, secure corrections management solutions that save hardworking taxpayers’ dollars,” says Damon Hininger, CCA president and chief executive officer.

The planned development will expand the private prison operator’s significant presence in the Georgia. CCA, which is headquartered in Nashville, currently operates five prisons and detention centers across the state, housing more than 7,000 inmates and detainees.

In addition to owning and operating the 1,524-bed Wheeler Correctional Facility in Alamo and the 1,524-bed Coffee Correctional Facility in Nicholls, housing state inmates under contract for the Georgia DOC, the company owns and operates the 1,524-bed McRae Correctional Facility in McRae for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

CCA also owns and operates the 1,752-bed Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin and the 502-bed North Georgia Detention Center in Gainesville housing detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
