Hunt-Mills Submits Low Bid for Savannah Jail

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Chatham County officials identified Hunt-Mills as the low-bidder for the proposed expansion of the approximately 1,500-bed county jail as all bids submitted came in tens of millions of dollars less than budgeted for the project.

Hunt Construction, headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., partnered with WG Mills, based in Sarasota, Fla., in tendering a base-bid of almost $61.5 million for the construction of the 850-beds jail addition, officials say. County officials, who have worked on the project for more than five years, budgeted $114 million for the entire project — including design and site work, according to reports.

In addition to new housing units, which will have the capacity to accommodate up to 850 inmates, the 300,000-square-foot expansion will incorporate new medical space and kitchen facilities, while portions of the existing jail building will also be renovated, officials say.

County officials are reviewing all bid submissions and are expected to announce a decision before the end of the year, according to reports.
