GEO Expands Southeast Operations

MILTON, Fla. — The GEO Group expanded its presence in the Southeastern U.S. with the opening of more than 4,500 new beds at facilities in Georgia and Florida.

The private prison operator began housing inmates at the recently opened $114 million Blackwater River Correctional Facility located in Milton, Fla. The 2,000-bed facility, which will house medium-security and close-custody inmates, was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, according to the company.

The company expects to complete the intake during the first months of 2011. At full occupancy, the facility is expected to generate approximately $31 million in annual revenues.

The private prison operator also began the intake of federal inmates at the D. Ray James Correctional Facility in Georgia. Under the terms of the new 10-year contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, GEO will house up to 2,507 low-security federal inmates at the James facility, officials say.

With the contract projected to generate approximately $52 million in annual revenues, the company expects to complete the intake process during the spring.
