SANTA MARIA, Calif. Santa Barbara Countys $80 million North County Jail Facility is tentatively slated to begin construction in November.

The 110,000-square-foot, 304-bed jail has been in the works since 2004 and will include supporting infrastructure such as inmate receiving, laundry, kitchen, medical, administration, programming and related functions.

Atlanta-based Rosser International is serving as the architect on the CM managed project.

The facility will house both male and female inmates in a mix of medium and high security cells. The site may ultimately support other correctional facilities, including a day reporting center.

The County of Santa Barbara issued an RFQ for construction management services in August 2009 and is working on a contract with construction manager Jacobs of Pasadena, Calif., although it is unknown when the contract will be awarded.

“The county recently completed eminent domain litigation, which will allow it to complete the purchase of the property (on which the jail will be built) and proceed toward construction,” said project lead Thomas Jenkins.

The jail is scheduled for completion in November 2013.
