Timothy P. Ryan

Timothy P. Ryan recently announced his retirement as the director of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department. Ryan’s retirement will be effective in early 2014, according to the county. He has held the director position for six years in which he led the eighth largest jail system in the U.S. and operated a budget of $347 million and was responsible for 5,600 inmates in custody, 3,800 on community release and over 450 on supervised community control. Prior to his position in Miami-Dade County, Ryan was the chief of correction for the Santa Clara County Department of Correction in San Jose, Calif., and also the chief of corrections in Orange County, Fla., back in 2002. Ryan was born in Oakland, Calif. and grew up in the community of Pleasant Hill (about 30 miles east of Oakland). He attended local public schools and graduated from the University of California in Berkeley in 1970. Ryan served as president of the national jail organization, the American Jail Association in 2002 to 2003, and just completed a four-year elected position as commissioner on the American Correctional Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. He is a graduate of the 175th FBI National Academy, the 2001 Harvard JFK School of Government "Senior Executives Program" and became one of the first Certified Jail Managers in America (1997).
