Arkansas Governor Seeks $7.4 Million for 200 Additional Prison Beds

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson is currently seeking $7.4 million in funding from the state to open 200 additional prison beds to ease the backlog of inmates being housed at local jails.

Hutchinson told the Arkansas State Sheriffs Association that he would ask lawmakers to approve of funding in about 18 months for the Pine Bluff Prison facility. “I’m asking for your patience and your support and to recognize that there is hope around the corner,” Hutchinson said in a statement.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) earlier this month awarded a number of one-time grants aimed at expanding rehabilitative programs in the state’s prisons. In total, the state committed $2.5 million to efforts to “boost innovative programs and increase volunteerism in prisons,” according to a statement by the CDCR.

Maine Jail Bill Wins Support

AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill that would grant greater authority to the Maine State Board of Corrections has won initial approval in both the House and Senate. L.D. 1824 primarily directs the board to establish an essential programs and services funding formula for county jails, and to review county jail management models implemented in other states. The measure received a 130-16 vote of support in the House and a 31-4 vote of support in the Senate.
