Utah Prison Development Commission to Seek Construction Manager

SALT LAKE CITY — On Nov. 5, Utah’s Prison Development Commission adopted a recommendation that includes hiring a company to manage the construction of a new prison in Salt Lake City. Utah to Build New State Prison

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a resolution in August to move the Utah State Prison from Draper to a site west of Salt Lake City International Airport.

Now that the governor signed off on the about $550 million project, the state can begin finalizing the purchase of the land and designing the new facility. It will be designed with space for rehabilitation and treatment programs, and will house about 4,000 inmates.

Programs Reduce Utah’s Youth Crime Rate

SALT LAKE CITY The juvenile crime rate in Utah has dropped from more than 6 percent to less than 1 percent over the last 20 years, and experts attribute the decline to the states approach to corrections and prevention.
 
The Utah Division of Juvenile Justice Services oversees juvenile offenders and rehabilitation in Utah. The number of minors referred to court has declined 20 percent since 2008, with the trend expected to continue through 2011.
