Illinois Prison System to Improve Mental-Health Conditions

PEORIA, Ill. — The Illinois prison system will add four mental-health treatment units and 350 clinical-staff employees as part of its plan to improve conditions for mentally ill inmates in response to inmate complaints in a federal lawsuit pending in U.S. District Court in Peoria.

GIFFORD, Ill. — Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) inmates volunteered to help with disaster relief efforts after 24 tornadoes damaged homes and buildings as well as killed at least six people in 15 Illinois counties in the central part of the state on Nov. 17.

TAMMS, Ill. — Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has proposed closing eight of the state’s correctional facilities, including Tamms Correctional Center in Tamms, Ill., the state’s only supermax prison. Employees at Tamms have recently received pink slips and the facility is expected to close by Aug. 31, 2012.
