Michael Champion


Correctional Medical Services Inc., a national provider of correctional health services based in St. Louis, named Michael Champion, M.D., as its vice president of behavioral health. Champion will oversee all behavioral health programs that the company implements, including psychiatric medical services, mental health counseling and chemical dependency treatment.
With more than 20 years in the field, Champion has experience in civil and criminal forensic psychiatry with an emphasis on correctional mental health care, treatment of behaviorally disordered offenders, the psychological impact of segregation and the forensic risk assessment of violence and suicide.  
Champion received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, trained in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and trained in forensic psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, where he studied the interface of law and medicine at Yale Law School.  
 
In addition to his faculty position at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Champion has served as the company’s regional director for psychiatry in New Mexico since 2007. He will retain that responsibility in his new position.
