North Carolina County to Build 100-Bed Jail

JEFFERSON, N.C. — Ashe County commissioners voted to include a 100-bed jail in a plan to build a new $5 million justice center.

The jail in use now only has 17 beds and has housed up to 32 inmates. In addition to the jail the justice center will houses the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office, magistrate offices, a communications center, space for the highway patrol, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and the State Bureau of investigations.

To accommodate the new facilities, the commission voted to purchase 6.7 acres located west of the Ashe County Courthouse for $750,000. Plans will allow the jail to expand to 158 beds to meet population projects.
