Two New Housing Units Added to St. Lucie Jail

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — An expansion at the St. Lucie County Jail is complete and inmates are being housed in two new housing units that were added to the facility.

SchenkelShultz Architecture worked with Centex Construction Company in a design-build effort that cost $19 million. Construction began in September 2004 and finished in November 2005.

The two new housing units can hold up to 576 inmates. The 30,549-square-foot north building includes 10 day rooms that can each hold 24 inmates and one day room the can hold16 inmates. The other 36,340-square-foot building also includes 10 day rooms that can each hold 24 inmates, in addition to two 40-inmate capacity day rooms.

The new facilities were designed to easily integrate with the jail’s security system and they will be able to incorporate a planned off-site video visitation facility.
