Two Prefectures in Japan Hit With Data Leak

TOKYO — After a prison officer’s computer was infected by a virus, personal information on approximately 3,400 detainees and 2,300 prison employees was leaked onto the Internet, according to Justice Ministry officials.

The leaked information included the names of people who had been in prison or detention facilities in Fukuoka and Shiga prefectures, most of whom have been released, say officials.

More than 10,000 pieces of information went onto the Internet after a CD that was circulated among officers created the security lapse.

Fukuoka Prefecture is located on Kyushu Island, Japan.
