This month, we go back to New Orleans to hear some stories of how authorities dealt with inmates during Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding that wreaked havoc on correctional facilities in the city.
In our Q&A, we talk to Marlin Gusman, Orleans Parish criminal sheriff, about how he and his department handled inmates during the storm. He also discusses the recovery efforts in his facilities and in New Orleans in general.
One of the facilities called to help house inmates was Bossier Parish Maximum Security Jail. Sheriff Larry Dean was happy to lend assistance, although there was one little problem: the new facility hadn’t opened yet.
Pulling together, they hustled the red tape through the proper channels and opened the 500-inmate facility just in the nick of time. Read all about our Facility of the Month.
