Gregg Hershberger
Gregg Hershberger retired as secretary of public safety and correctional services for the state of Maryland on Dec. 5. Hershberger served the department for more than 30 years, acting as secretary for the past year and overseeing all state correctional facilities and community supervision programs. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Elizabethtown College in 1976 and began his justice career as a correctional officer with the now Franklin County Jail in 1982. The following year he became a case manager, and went on to serve as a case management supervisor, facility administrator and assistant warden. Hershberger was named warden of Roxbury Correctional Institution in 2009 and prior to be appointed secretary was also the department’s executive director for the north region.
