N.C. Justice Center Chosen, Officials Unsure of Layout

WENTWORTH, N.C. — County officials are reviewing plans for a new county justice center that could include a new courthouse, jail and 911 call center.

A location on Highway 65, where the existing Rockingham Jail annex is located, was selected for the new facility, but officials are still working on a layout that will be conducive to county operations.

Officials would like to place the new courthouse directly in front of the jail to simplify prisoner transport. In minimizing transport, officials hope to increase safety and save money.

The new plans, which include information on utilizing the property, the functionality of the building’s layout, and potential parking arrangements were presented to the public and officials in November.

The existing courthouse, built in 1907, no longer serves the county’s needs. The antiquated building has safety and maintenance issues, and it is too small for the county’s increased population.

Completion of the facility’s design is expected by the end of 2007, and the bid process is slated to begin in early 2008. The existing courthouse will likely be renovated and used for another county purpose.
