Potential Prison Could Boost Revenue for Adelanto

ADELANTO, Calif. — Building a new prison is on the 2012 to-do list for Adelanto, Calif. The city is working on the drawings for a new prison that would be operated by the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

If the city succeeds in its plan to build the prison near the current San Bernardino County Adelanto Detention Center it could generate $5 million annually, a needed revenue for the city.

Michigan Village Hopes for Prison Reopening

BALDWIN, Mich. — When Michigan’s North Lake Detention Facility stopped housing youthful offenders five years ago, the tiny city of Baldwin lost its largest employer, the tax base shrunk and a number of restaurants and stores closed. The county’s unemployment rate hit 20 percent earlier this year.
 
Residents and officials in Baldwin are now hoping that a private prison contract involving inmates from California will help revitalize the areas economy.

GEO Nabs Immigration Detainee Contract

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Private prison operator The GEO Group was awarded a contract for the housing of up to 600 immigration detainees by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, or ICE. Officials in Karnes County Texas officials awarded the contract, and GEO Group expects to generate $15 million in annual revenues.

GEO Consolidates Healthcare Operations, Opens New Facility

ARCADIA, Fla. — The GEO Group opened a new $62 million secure treatment facility as the private prison operator announced the consolidation of correctional healthcare functions under the company’s GEO Care division.

The new 720-bed Florida Civil Commitment Center replaces the existing 660-bed facility in Arcadia, and is designed to provide comprehensive treatment programming for offenders detained or committed under Florida’s Sexually Violent Predator Act.

FCCC is Florida’s only civil commitment program for sexual offenders in the state.
