It’s spring. So that means it’s time again for our annual Product News. We like to show you the best and brightest of the new products available for the correctional market. For example, since security and communication are of paramount importance in a correctional facility, Security Electronics is naturally a popular section in Product News. Have a look at the newest addition to Harding’s stellar line-up of intercoms:
Digital Intercom
Harding Instruments Co.’s DXL is the newest member of the Microcomm family of digital intercom systems. The system facilitates secure and clear communication with inmates, correctional officer and visitors. A variety of master stations and intercom stations are available to satisfy the needs of virtually any installation.
For customers installing a new system, the company recommends its 400-series DXL solution. This series carries both audio and switch status on a single supervised wiring pair and provides microphone amplification at the station. All systems provide a full range of calling, paging and monitoring features (including load sharing and call forwarding) to help enhance the safety and security of a facility.

Have a look at some other great new products from the 2006 Product News issue from Correctional News:
Concrete Masonry Units
M/Bed addresses the challenge of attaching fixtures to concrete masonry. The company provides steel plates embedded into one or more faces of standard concrete masonry units during manufacture. The permanent mounting area can be installed by a mason and incorporated into the rest of the wall.
M/Bed blocks are available in a variety of plate arrangements on CMU that will accommodate 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-inch thick walls. Blocks are shipped to a job site with metal components prepared using red primer. The product is designed for use in prison cells, schools and training facilities, fitness facilities and locker and shower areas.
Precast Concrete Building Components
Oldcastle Precast Modular Group manufacturers four-sided, monolithically cast concrete building components that can be used for administrative offices, storage and classroom space. The building components have a 32-foot interior span and come in 8-, 10- and 12-by-32-foot sections. The building components offer the same structural integrity and weather resistance as a conventionally built structure.
Full precast buildings come complete with modular components, hollow core, and wall panels. Finishes are available for aesthetically appealing exterior facades. This system is designed to meet a client’s specifications and legal requirements.
Waste Disposal
The larger Auger Monster XD (Extreme Duty) wastewater screen available from JWC Environmental now features a larger, more powerful drive system and Macho Monster grinding technology. According to the company, with a 10 horsepower motor and 7-inch steel cutters, this combination grinding, removing and washing system can handle a wider variety of solids typically found in prison wastewater including whole food items, rags, clothing and plastics.
A controller offers unmanned operation and allows the end user to set the run cycle for maximum machine efficiency and to produce a clean and dry discharged end product.
Mobile Storage
Spacesaver Corporation offers the Eclipse Powered System, a high-density mobile storage system. The system’s features include menu-based configurability, meaning users can choose features and options on an a la carte basis to build a personalized system. The modular design also allows the flexibility for future upgrades.
The system has noncontact limit switches, no-touch circuit boards and upgraded engineering to handle heavy use. It can be programmed to automatically open a heavily used aisle, close all aisles, open aisles evenly for ventilation or move carriages to predetermined positions in the event of a fire. The aisle access touchpad has only three buttons: stop, move left and move right.
Flexible Food Tray
The Flex-Tray was designed specifically for use by inmates to eliminate security risks at correctional facilities. The tray is made from silicone that is completely flexible and cannot be sharpened into a weapon.
The tray can be used at cook/chill facilities and can withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 482 degrees. The trays are available in the Cook’s Correctional Kitchen Equipment Guide 2006. The 167-page guide features detailed listings and photos of products designed specifically for correctional food service.
