Turner Manages $110 Million Chicago Court Project
CHICAGO — Turner Construction Co. will provide construction management services for the GSA’s $110 million renovation of the Everett McKinley Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in Chicago.
The 30-story glass and steel building, designed by Mies van der Rohe and built in 1964, houses federal district and bankruptcy courts, and the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
The 1.3 million-square-foot facility, home to the third largest federal district court, incorporates 57 courtrooms, associated judges chambers and administrative space. It also houses the offices of the U.S. attorney, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. trustee and several other federal agencies.
Turner is providing preconstruction estimating, scheduling and logistical services for the phased construction and renovation project, which includes the upgrade of major building systems and the complete fit-out of three floors.
The renovation will transform the historic landmark into a high-performance, energy-efficient building, says Steve Fort, general manager of Turner’s Chicago office.
The project scope covers the replacement of lighting, heating and cooling systems and the installation of new smoke detection and fire suppression systems. A new emergency generator will provide a back-up power source.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
In other news, Corrections Corporation of America selected the New Turner to manage expansion projects designed to create a total of 1,660 new beds for the private prison operator at two medium-security prison facilities in Georgia.
The projects have a combined construction cost of $52 million and are scheduled for completion in June 2010.
The $27 million expansion of CCA’s 1,524-bed Wheeler County Correctional Facility, in Alamo, includes the construction of two new dormitory buildings designed to house 792 inmates. The $25 million expansion at Coffee County Correctional Facility, in Nicholls, will create additional housing for 868 inmates. CCA currently operates 1,680 beds at the Coffee facility.
The scope of work also includes the renovation of segregation housing units and general population dormitories at the two correctional facilities, the upgrade of common areas and the installation of electrified perimeter fencing.
