Judicial Council Delays Seven New Courthouses

SAN FRANCISCO — The Judicial Council recently accepted recommendations from its Court Facilities Working Group to indefinitely delay seven new courthouse projects due to ongoing state budget cuts. The seven projects — in Kern, Los Angeles, Monterey, Placer and Plumas Counties — will be paused until funding is restored or regained through cost savings on other projects.

Renovation Under Way at Alcatraz Island

SAN FRANCISCO — Alcatraz Island has not held inmates since 1963, but construction next to the famous prison is under way.

A 72-year-old water tower, the most visible feature on Alcatraz Island from San Francisco, is wrapped in white tarp and scaffolding as it undergoes more than $1 million in repairs.

The island has welcomed visitors to San Francisco’s bay since it became a national recreation area in 1972.

SF Plan Includes $290 Million Jail

SAN FRANCISCO — City officials introduced preliminary plans for a 10-year, multimillion-dollar project that could result in the construction of new police and fire facilities, a new jail, and potentially a new San Francisco Superior Courthouse.
 
The plan would ultimately replace the 52-year-old Hall of Justice, a facility that suffers from seismic hazards, obsolete systems, space limitations and code issues.
