$5 Million Jail Bond Heads to New Mexico Voters in November

Socorro, N.M. — Socorro County Manager Delilah Walsh presented the results of a jail bond survey to the Board of County Commissioners at its meeting on Aug. 14. Based on county residents’ general approval of the jail bond issue, the board voted to place a $5 million bond on the November ballot.

As it stands, the county’s plan is to commit $1.5 million for the new jail from the general fund, then pay for the bond with an existing levy of 1.9 mills, which was previously used to refurbish the building which houses the District 7 court.

CAMP VERDE, Ariz. — The National Association of Counties (NACo) selected Yavapai County Sheriff Steve Waugh as a 2011 recipient of its national Courthouse award. Report: U.S. Jail Population Continues to Decline

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. jail inmate population has declined for the second consecutive year, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics announced.
 
The jail population declined by 2.4 percent in the 12 months ending June 30, 2010, dropping from 767,434 to 748,728. This follows a 2.3 percent decline in 2009 and is the second time the jail population has declined since BJS began the Annual Survey of Jails in 1982. In addition, the jail incarceration rate in 2010 declined to 242 jail inmates per 100,000 U.S.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The chief of operations for the state Regional Jail Authority may be fired after a court hearing for his aggravated DUI arrest is held in late June.
