Inmate suicide is an unfortunate, but not uncommon, problem that those in the corrections industry must address. While reports of inmate suicides are numerous, a recent study reveals that suicide rates in both jails and state prisons have dropped during the last 20 years.

However, these statistics do not indicate that this problem should be swept aside. A proactive stance and continued staff training can go a long way in keeping suicide at bay in your facility.

In this month’s Spotlight, we talk to Lindsay M. Hayes, project director of the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives, who has researched suicide at correctional facilities for nearly 25 years. He elaborates on some successful strategies for reducing the opportunity to commit suicide.

Could I ask a quick favor? I’d love to know what you think about our site. I’d really appreciate it if you’d take a quick survey. We’ll send one of the infamous “Build it and they will come.” t-shirts to the first 10 respondents. Start the survey.
