Georgia Gubernatorial Campaign Focuses on Sex Offenders

ATLANTA — Candidates running for governor in Georgia’s November election have taken a strong stance on targeting sex offenders.

During his campaign, Gov. Sonny Perdue announced an initiative intended to battle and apprehend Internet predators. The Child Safety Initiative will triple the number of undercover agents who investigate child pornography cases and Internet predators. CSI also doubles the number of forensic computer specialists, who collect technical evidence to prosecute computer crimes.

Opponent Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor also came out with an anti-crime proposal to target sexual predators. The legislation includes imposing the death penalty for repeat offenders convicted of molesting and/or raping a child under the age of 14 more than once.

Five other states in the country have similar death penalty laws in place.
