Maryland to Use GPS to Monitor 300 Sex Offenders

BALTIMORE — More than 300 repeat sex offenders in North Carolina will soon be tracked by GPS monitoring.

Starting in January, satellite monitoring will make it possible for law enforcement officials to keep tabs on the location of sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

A police officer will be responsible for the system in each county. The system can be programmed to alert the officers when an offender has entered an off-limits zone such as a day-care center, school or park.

The monitoring system was made possible by a law that also mandates that sex offenders cannot live or work within 1,000 feet of a day-care center or school, and they cannot volunteer as a group leader for youth groups.
