Prison Size Doubling at Norfolk Facility
NORFOLK, England — A prison in Norfolk, originally designed to hold 450 inmates, will expand to accommodate more than double its original capacity.
Wayland Prison will be expanded to house 300 more prisoners with the addition of pre-fabricated cells, bringing potential capacity up to 1,000 inmates.
The facility has expanded three times during the last decade from 450 inmates to 750 inmates. Prison officials are confident that the new expansion will be successful based on their past experiences at Wayland.
Overcrowding has put a strain on the facility, according to government officials.
The category C prison opened in 1985, providing vocational training for inmates. Some inmates are expected to participate in a sex offender treatment program.
