WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — Wilkes County correctional officials celebrated the dedication of a new 58,000-square-foot jail on Oct. 22. The new $12.6 million facility will house up to 264 inmates when it begins operations later this month, allowing correctional officials to practice proper inmate segregation and classification for the first time in years.

Detroit Commissioners Vote Against Jail Relocation

DETROIT — Wayne County Commissioners have scrapped plans to relocate the county’s jail to the vacant Mound Road Correctional Facility by a vote of 12-3. The Oct. 16 decision will narrow the board’s focus to either completing the half-finished downtown jail or renovating other existing correctional facilities.

Crowded Michigan Jail to Receive Third Expansion

LIVINGSTON, Mich. — The Livingston County Board of Commissioners has approved construction contracts, as well as the issuing of up to $15 million in tax-exempt general obligation bonds, clearing the way for expansion at the county’s severely overcrowded jail. The expansion project will add a number of new beds to the chronically overwhelmed facility, increasing its bed capacity from 254 to 411.

Escambia County to Relocate Decimated Jail

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Escambia County officials have announced plans to replace the Central Booking and Detention Facility in West Pensacola, which was destroyed by a natural gas explosion in April. Though a federal investigation into the explosion that killed two, paralyzed one and injured 184 is not yet complete; commissioners have elected to begin construction on a new facility outside the area’s flood zone.

ELKO, Nev. — Following an April vote to allocate $3.6 million to construction of a new jail wing, Elko County commissioners have selected Ormaza Construction to complete a much-needed building expansion. The firm was selected from a pool of four qualified bidders to construct the more than $4.1 million project.

DeSoto Supervisors Green Light Jail Addition

HERNANDO, Miss. — DeSoto County supervisors recently approved the second phase of construction on the DeSoto County jail, which will include space for 268 new inmates. When completed, the addition will greatly increase the county’s inmate housing capacity, bringing the jail up to 572 beds.
