President Obama recently recognized Peninsula College Corrections Education Director Brian Walsh as a Connected Educator and a Champion of Change. Walsh has led efforts to expand the use of technology in prison classrooms at both the Olympic and Clallam Bay correction centers, and started the first prison-based Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) program, a nationally recognized program that combines basic education and hands-on job experiences. He was also the driving force behind five new prison vocational programs including Sustainable Horticulture and Green Building. Walsh received the award along with nine other educators in a ceremony on Nov. 21 at the White House.
