New Hampshire Facility Seeks More Wards
MANCHESTER, N.H. — The state of New Hampshire is offering to house juveniles from other New England jurisdictions at its new youth detention facility that has about 50 open beds.
Officials at the New Hampshire Youth Development Center are looking to generate more revenue for the facility by accepting out-of-state offenders. The facility could charge for the supervision, education and medical care supplied to the youths from other jurisdictions.
The facility houses youths who have been sentenced and pretrial offenders. The federal government funded most of the cost for 144-bed secure facility.
California made a request to house juveniles at the facility, but the request was denied because officials believed the distance between the two states would infringe on the center’s family reunification programs, according to reports.
In other news, officials at the facility are considering a farmer’s request to create a community garden on an area of land that is covered with invasive species. There is enough undeveloped land to accommodate produce needs for 150 families, according to reports.
