County Commissioners Reject Juvenile Facility
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Residents were successful in a last-ditch effort to block an attempt by the state to build a juvenile correctional facility near Sand Camp Road.
After initially informally supporting the project in 2004, the Guilford County Commission blocked the state’s permit request to build a 32-bed facility, citing concerns of depreciating property values and lack of security. The project had previously won approval from the county’s planning board, despite ongoing protests from residents during the last year.
The state hoped to appease the residents by promising a building that would resemble a school with trees lining the roadway.
