ACA Winter Show/Perimeter Security

It seems like we were just sweating it out at the ACA summer trade show in Kansas City, and here we are decompressing after the annual winter conference. Is green catching on? According to the buzz we heard it is, along with other developments in construction, staffing and security. Read our coverage of the ACA show, and be sure to check out the upcoming March/April Correctional News for a comprehensive look at green developments and other hot topics in the industry (Subscribe here if you are not already on our list).

Speaking of security issues, it seems like horror stories of security breaches were abundant in 2007 and 2008 could turn out to be the same. On New Year’s Day an inmate overpowered guards during a medical examination at a local hospital in Maryland and was on the loose for several hours before he was shot and killed by police.

Incidents involving escaped inmates are, obviously, extremely dangerous for the public and law enforcement personnel, and the correctional agency involved is often left with egg on its face. But security is a complex issue and, according to security professionals, there is no catchall approach for every correctional facility.

Correctional News recently spoke with several key correctional security professionals to find out their opinion on the state of the market, new developments and best practices. We are also happy to present our 2008 Security Electronics Contractors list, the most complete listing of SECs in the correctional industry. Have a look at the articles below, and let us know what you think by sending an e-mail to cn@emlenpub.com.
