FBOP Brings West Virginia Prison Online

WELCH, W.Va. — The first of more than 1,100 inmates moved into the new federal prison here as the Bureau of Prisons activated the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution McDowell.

Located adjacent to a 128-bed minimum-security federal prison camp in the southwest corner of West Virginia, the approximately $225 million prison is designed to house up to 1,152 inmates. Lindal Construction Management of Springfield, Va., provided construction management services on the more than 592,000-square-foot campus-style project.

The new medium-security component for adult male inmates incorporates multiple housing units and support facilities. A Federal Prison Industries manufacturing facility is also situated within the medium-security compound, while the administration building is located on the minimum-security potion of the development, which is occupied by the prison camp.

With work commencing in summer 2008, the project took two years to complete.
