Charleston County, S.C. Assistant and Jail Administrator Sheriff Mitch Lucas was recently elected president of the American Jail Association during the group’s 34th annual training conference in Charlotte, N.C. Lucas will head the organization — which helps establish jail standards and education and train correctional professionals — for one year. Lucas currently oversees the state’s largest jail facility, the Sheriff Al Canon Detention Center, which maintains more than 1,900 beds and hundreds of staff. The South Carolina Jail Administrators Association also named him Jail Administrator of the Year in 2012. Lucas served as an administrative lieutenant and sheriff’s adjutant from 1983 to 1996.
